For many young people leaving foster care or families rebuilding after hardship, the idea of “starting over” sounds hopeful—but the reality is often anything but easy. Imagine being handed the keys to a bare house: no bed to sleep on, no kettle for a cup of tea, no towels, no plates, just walls and a roof.
For young adults aging out of care, families reunifying with their children, or survivors of family violence, this is a deeply vulnerable moment. Without practical support, it can become overwhelming. That’s why A Better Life For Foster Kids created the Housing Transition Package program, to turn empty spaces into true homes filled with comfort, safety, and promise.
With the help of our incredible volunteers and generous community, we fully furnish and stock entire homes with the essentials needed to live with dignity and stability. Each package is carefully tailored to the household’s specific needs. A typical Housing Transition Package includes:
We offer Housing Transition Packages to:
Young adults transitioning out of foster or kinship care
Families reunifying with children after time in care
Women and families relocating due to family violence or crisis
Requests must come through a carer or case worker familiar with the family’s situation. This ensures we can assess needs, coordinate with other supports, and tailor each package appropriately.
Each Housing Transition Package requires time, resources, and careful coordination, but with community support, we can continue this life-changing work.
We walked into a house, not a shell. There were cups in the cupboard, towels in the bathroom. My kids finally felt safe again. It’s hard to put into words what that meant to us.
