It might have happened in 2020, but for us, it still feels like yesterday. A Better Life for Foster Kids was named a semi-finalist in the GOTAFE Community Group category of the Victorian Community Awards for foster care—a milestone that honoured not just our organisation, but the hundreds of volunteers, supporters, and carers who make our work possible.

From Grassroots to Recognition

We didn’t start this journey for accolades. A Better Life for Foster Kids was born out of heartbreak, determination, and the urgent need to provide dignity and comfort to children entering out-of-home care. Back then, we were packing Crisis Cases in our lounge rooms, relying on donations from kind-hearted community members, and trying to raise awareness about how broken the foster care system can be.

So when we received word that we’d been named a semi-finalist in the Victorian Community Awards for foster care, it was more than an honour—it was validation. It told us that others were watching, listening, and beginning to understand the scale of the problem.

A Moment That Sparked Momentum

That moment in 2020 helped shine a statewide spotlight on our mission. The recognition sparked new partnerships, increased volunteer involvement, and brought in funding that helped us expand our Crisis Case program across regional Victoria. It proved what we always believed: when local communities step up, big change is possible.

In the years since, the need has only grown. The foster care system remains under strain. The number of children entering care continues to rise, and too many still arrive with nothing but the clothes on their backs. But thanks to support from people like you—and the awareness raised through moments like the Victorian Community Awards for foster care—we’ve been able to respond faster, reach further, and do more.

Celebrating Community-Led Change

Awards don’t change the world—but they do help change the conversation. Being recognised as a semi-finalist was a reminder that we’re not alone in this work. It reminded carers they are seen. It reminded donors their contributions matter. And it reminded our team that even the smallest act of kindness can ripple outward to impact hundreds of lives.

As we continue our mission to provide dignity, stability, and hope to children in out-of-home care, we carry that 2020 milestone with pride. It’s a symbol of what’s possible when community spirit meets compassion and action.
