Supporting Children in Foster Care with Urgent Essentials

We are proud to look back that A Better Life for Foster Kids has received a Loy Yang B Community Partnership Grant. This funding has enable us to provide foster care Crisis Cases to 110 children entering out-of-home care back in 2020.

Our Crisis Cases are urgently needed. Approximately 90% of children who receive them are removed from their homes due to domestic violence. With the COVID-19 pandemic compounding family violence rates and making it harder for carers to quickly access essential items, this support could not have come at a more critical time.

Meeting Urgent Needs with Compassion

The funding from Loy Yang B will help us ensured that every child receives the clothing, toiletries, and comfort items they need immediately upon entering care. More than just a bag of essentials, Crisis Cases restore dignity and reduce the burden on carers during a time of upheaval.

As Nicole Boskma, Communications Coordinator at Loy Yang B, shared when informing us of the grant, the value of this support was immediately evident. We couldn’t agree more.

Why Crisis Cases Matter

One foster carer told us:

“We’ve been a single-income family since becoming foster carers, because our child needed a stay-at-home parent. It brings joy to a child, but often at great financial cost. Thank goodness for agencies that help when kids arrive with nothing.”

Their story was not unique. Without organisations like ours, many carers were left scrambling to meet basic needs in the first few days of a placement. Foster care Crisis Cases helped bridge that gap—making transitions less traumatic for children and more manageable for carers.

Looking Ahead

We’re incredibly grateful for Loy Yang B’s support and commitment to our cause. This funding ensured that 110 children began their care journey with warm clothes, a soft toy, and a sense that someone cares.

With community partnerships like this, real change is possible. If you’d like to help us expand the reach of our Crisis Cases, consider donating or getting involved. Together, we can create better beginnings for children in foster care.
